Society is becoming more dependent upon digital devices and these are becoming a way of life for our students - almost all students use a cell phone daily for texting, connecting to the internet, using social networking sites, playing games, taking photos/videos, and some actually even make phone calls. Not providing the opportunity for students to extend their use of these devices may possibly hinder their future opportunities. At Aurora College, we are extending the use of these devices to support students’ learning and engagement in their classes.
One of the biggest driving factors in the purchase of these devices for our students is the effect using such devices has on their literacy (reading and writing skills). There has been much world-wide evidence suggesting the use of this technology will significantly improve this skill set.
Facts have been published on the percentage of US children who text, use social networking sites, send email and yet do not like writing - if we can use the things that they are already doing and develop their literacy skills around them, then I believe we have a winner !
Presently all students in Year 7-10 have their “own” iPad and investigations are ongoing on how to take this programme into all students in the senior levels.
